Dr. Kebba Marenah
Dr. Kebba S Marenah is The Gambia’s first consultant (specialist) in trauma & orthopaedic surgery. He is currently the Head of Department of Surgery at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) and a senior lecturer at the School of Medicine at UTG. Dr. Marenah trained in the U.K. where he spent 20 years before returning to The Gambia in August 2018 to head the Orthopaedic Department at EFSTH. He has spearheaded a number of initiatives for improvement ranging from obtaining equipment and building infrastructure to training healthcare workers. As a result, he is now able to successfully treat the majority of fractures in The Gambia where before, the closest option was to travel to Senegal for these operations. Marenah has also helped secure million dalasi partnerships with international organisations to continue to improve fracture care and bring more awareness to the burden of trauma in the country. In 2019, Marenah and his team performed the first-ever hip replacement in The Gambia.
In the same year, they also successfully performed the first-ever minimally invasive (key hole) knee surgery in the country. Amongst other commitments, and serving on various (mostly health related) committees, he is the lead doctor for the country’s recently started clubfoot treatment programme and is also the link person for a number of visiting teams to help with free surgeries.
