Madam Isatou Sanyang
Madam Isatou Sanyang is a deaf and physically challenged person. She began her teaching career in 1982 but quit in 1983 due to a serious illness, which led to her deafness. Her desire for self-empowerment and personal fulfillment led her to enroll at the President’s International Award from 1992 to 1993 where she acquired skills in the secretarial field. Isatou joined the Gambia Association for the Deaf and Hard and of Hearing (GADHOH) Female Wing Nursery and Skill Center in 2002 and rose through the ranks to become the director. Isatou has travelled wide and far, including Europe and the United States to attend several capacity development programs, including a women’s institute on leadership and disability. In 2012, she became the first female president of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled. Isatou’s strong advocacy for the rights and welfare of persons with disability has been hailed. She has been praised for advancing the basic human rights of Gambian deaf children through opportunities in conventional and vocational education.
