Maruo Farms is an indigenous and fully-integrated rice production company in The Gambia. Its business is focused on the ‘end-to-end’ rice value chain. From the cultivation of local rice varieties to processing and marketing of a finished product, Maruo’s products can compete favorably with imported foreign rice in the Gambian market. The Farm is reimagining the business of local rice production in the country through a business model that taps into a significant demand for rice in the domestic market. The Farm is committed to harnessing the country’s abundant but under-utilized natural and labour resources, creating economic opportunities for investors, partner-farmers, and the local communities, and potentially substituting the dominance of imported rice in The Gambia. Maruo currently has 200 local farmers under contract farming. The Farm was able to increase the per hectare yield of rice by two folds and continues to innovate new ideas by seeking for improved rice varieties and best agronomic practices.
