Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe

Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe became the country’s first-ever female mayor after she contested and won the 2018 Local Government Elections for the Banjul mayoral seat. Her political feat was seen as a breakthrough in a field largely dominated by men. Mayor Lowe is described as a proactive and hardworking individual with significant years of experience as an entrepreneur within the tourism industry. She studied International Relations at the University of Falun in Sweden and her academic experience has provided her with a strong theoretical knowledge of public administration. Since her inception, she has implemented several initiatives, including: scholarships awarded to 200 students and the securing of 3.1 million Euros from the European Union to fund projects such as the “Sustainable Development Centre for the Youth.” The mayor also provided 3000 dustbins to households in Banjul, secured a compactor and sewage vehicles. Through personal efforts, she launched the Rohey Malick Lowe Women and Girls Empowerment Initiative, a 10,000,000 Dalasi scheme to support the women of Banjul who want to start businesses.
