Sise Jaha Sawaneh

Sise Jaha Sawaneh, a prominent Gambian journalist and activist died in a fatal car accident in 2019 at the tender age of 27. The late Sise was a Sarahule announcer and the main host of the famous Sarahuleh talk show on GRTS called “Mefahamundeh.” Sise worked with rights groups advocating for the eradication of all forms of violence against women, especially Female Genital Mutilation. She helped bridge gaps in communities and was keen on ending the caste system in Sarahule communities. Sise succeeded where many failed by reconciling her people. The journey that would end her life was also a reconciliation effort. The late Sise and her colleagues had intended to use sports to further unite their people, but their lives would be cut short in a tragic accident in the Lower River Region. Sise was well-travelled and successfully built an international image as an ardent advocate for women and girls’ rights.
